Overview

A sensitive restoration and contemporary extension of a 1920s Californian bungalow in Glebe. The heritage overlay required all changes to be reversible from the street.

Challenge

The existing bungalow retained its original proportions but needed more space. The clients wanted the addition to feel genuinely new — not a replica of the original.

Solution

We designed a rear extension in dark-stained timber that reads as clearly contemporary against the original painted weatherboard. Inside, new and old are connected by a full-width skylight above the threshold. The kitchen and dining extend into a new north-facing courtyard.

Result

Completed April 2020. Heritage approval granted at first submission — no modifications required · Rear extension designed to be fully demountable per heritage condition · Featured in Habitus Magazine, Issue #58 (2021).
