Overview

A four-bedroom coastal residence on an elevated block in Noosa, designed to capture views across the Noosa River to the National Park beyond.

Challenge

The clients wanted a home that felt distinctly Queensland: open, breezy, connected to the outdoors year-round. The site's exposure to the north-east, while ideal for views, created challenges for passive cooling in a humid subtropical climate.

Solution

We oriented the main living pavilion to face north-east with deep overhanging eaves and a louvred breezeway connecting the living and sleeping wings. Cross-ventilation was prioritised over mechanical cooling. The material palette draws from the surrounding landscape — raw timber, off-form concrete, and coastal stone.

Result

Completed February 2024. 89% of occupied hours within comfort range without mechanical cooling · Client chose to forgo planned ducted air conditioning post-occupancy · Pending submission to Houses Magazine (2025).
